Overview – NSW State Emergency Services
Floods and storms are one of the most serious natural hazards that face the community of New South Wales. These threats provide the core business of the State Emergency Service (SES) as the legislated combat agency. In addition to these legislated roles, the SES also provides accredited rescue services including Road Crash Rescue in support of NSW Police Force and Community First Responder in support of the Ambulance Service of NSW.
Why did you join the NSW SES and what is your role?
I was seeking a role in a people focused environment – at the SES I am working and assisting the community. My role is Major Operations Officer. I am responsible for the Operational Readiness of the State Operations Centre (SOC) – including staffing (sourcing & training), equipment, procedure and process and reporting and when we are operational – working in the SOC with a strategic focus in support of Regions/Units.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of the job is the people I get to work with. The SES has both employees and volunteers from all walks of life. I work with colleagues who have a wealth of knowledge and experience in emergency management and come from a variety of different backgrounds. I also get to travel to regional areas across the state.
What makes a good Major Operations Officer?
Problem solving abilities and the ability to quickly identify key operational issues is really important especially when we are managing an emergency. Leadership, Management Skills, high level communication skills, mission focus, people focus and a sense of humour. Ability to work under pressure in a deadline driven environment is really important as the public depends on us to be making good decisions.
Would you recommend your job to others?
Definitely, it is an extremely interesting and rewarding role and organisation to work for.
