Why did you become a Nurse?

Nursing was recommended to me by my best mate. I had 6 months of work experience in an innovative nursing home where I was inspired by my dedicated colleagues and the quality of the care it provided.

What do you like about your job?

I enjoy the camaraderie offered by nursing. Nurses are well-supported and as a career it offers a great deal of job satisfaction, which is why I’m still doing it after 27 years. There is lots of variety within the work – no day is the same. Techniques for treatment and methods of care are constantly being upgraded and updated, this continual renewal of education and knowledge help make my job interesting and challenging. Most significantly, the work I do makes a difference.

What do you believe makes a good Nurse? What skills do you need?

You must have good communication, people management, planning and listening skills, empathy, dedication, good clinical knowledge and skills. But passion is what makes a great nurse, applying the excellent training and knowledge to the work each day with passion makes a difference.

Would you recommend your job to others? Why?

Yes, if you are looking for a career, not just a job, with the opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives, nursing is a great path. Nursing has lots of avenues for promotion and progression into various fields such as education, administrative, and higher clinical levels. The work is varied and is interesting and challenging, it is hands on and mentally stimulating. Passion is what makes a great nurse!
